How did civil servants in the Qin Dynasty work? What was mentioned in China’s first family letter? Answers to these questions can be found at the Yunmeng County Museum.

云梦县博物馆是国家二级博物馆，现有馆藏文物5000余件（The Yunmeng County Museum is a national second-class museum, with a collection of over 5,000 cultural relics）

云梦县是全湖北最小的县，1975年民工挖排水渠时的偶然发现，让这里成为享誉世界的“简牍之乡”。云梦县博物馆的占地面积约2.5万平方米，地处小县城却能馆藏大文物，这座县级博物馆有何特别之处呢？近日，极目新闻记者走进云梦县博物馆，对话馆长张宏奎，探寻秦汉简牍背后的故事。

Yunmeng County, the smallest county in Hubei Province, gained international recognition as the “Hometown of Bamboo Slips” after an accidental discovery by migrant workers digging a water channel in 1975. The Yunmeng County Museum covers an area of about 25,000 square meters, and despite its location in a small county, it houses a vast collection of significant cultural relics. What makes this county-level museum stand out? Recently, a reporter from Jimu News visited the Yunmeng County Museum and interviewed Zhang Hongkui, the museum’s curator,to explore the stories behind the Qin and Han dynasty bamboo slips.

据张宏奎介绍，云梦睡虎地秦简于1975年12月出土，是考古史上首次发现的秦代竹简，共1100余枚，近4万字，涵盖政治、经济、法律等多方面内容，其中法律内容超半数，被誉为“秦史百科”。

According to Zhang, the Yunmeng Shuihudi Qin bamboo slips were unearthed in December 1975. This was the first discovery of Qin Dynasty bamboo slips in the archaeological history. A total of more than 1,100 pieces, containing nearly 40,000 characters,were found, covering various aspects of politics, economyand law, with the legal content accounting for more than half. The collection has been praised as “theEncyclopedia of the Qin History.”

睡虎地还出土了“中国第一封家书”。公元前223年，王翦率60万大军灭楚，其麾下黑夫与惊兄弟二人从河南淮阳写信给家中，质朴的亲情令人动容。

Shuihudi also unearthed “China’s First Family Letter.” In 223 BC, Wang Jian led an army of 600,000 to destroy the state of Chu. Two men—Heifu and Jing, soldiers under his command—wrote letters from Huaiyang, Henan, to their family members. The simple yet heartfelt familial affection expressed in the letters is deeply moving.

游客观看“秦简”。云梦出土秦代竹简共1100余枚，近4万字，被誉为“秦史百科”（Visitorsobservethe “Qin slips”. Over 1,100 Qindynastybamboo slips, with nearly 40,000 characters, were unearthed in Yunmeng andare now hailed as the“Encyclopedia of the Qin History”）

“郑家湖墓地共计发掘墓葬350余座，出土文物2000余件，中华第一长文觚是这次考古发现的最重要的成果之一。”据张宏奎介绍，中华第一长文觚的材质为木质，像简、牍的合体，共书写近700字，记载了战国末期纵横家游说秦王一事，对研究战国时期秦统一的过程提供了重要的实物资料。

“We have discovered more than 350 tombs and 2,000 artifacts in Zhengjiahu Tombs in Yunmeng. The most significant one is the longest wooden slip in China.”With nearly700 characters on it, it is likely to be the integration of jian(slips made of bamboo) and du(slips made of wood), recording the story of the political strategists from the late Warring States period persuading the King of Qin, providing crucial tangible evidence for understanding the process leading up to China’s unification during the rule of Qin.

云梦县博物馆成立于1983年，现有馆藏文物5000余件，其中一级文物49件套，秦汉简牍和漆器最为著名。为了更好地接受和保存出土文物，云梦县博物馆成立了出土木漆器保护国家文物局重点科研基地云梦工作站，培养专业人才，做好文物保护修复工作。

Yunmeng Museum, established in 1983, displays over 5,000 artifacts, including 49 first-class artifacts. Among them, the bamboo and wooden slips and lacquers of Qin and Han Dynasty are the most famous. To better receive and preserve artifacts, the museum has established a specialized department, named Yunmeng Workstation of the Key Research Base for the Protection of Wooden Lacquerware under the National Cultural Heritage Administration, for the training of specialists.

张宏奎介绍，未来云梦县博物馆将提升展陈品质，推动文物活化，让更多人领略中华文化底蕴。

Zhang stated that moving forward, Yunmeng Museum aims to enhancethe quality of its exhibitions,leveraging these cultural relics to promote Chinese cultural heritage far and wide.
